Mission Statement: Our mission is to provide evaluations, treatment, and consultative services to children identified with communication challenges. Our goal is to enable students to communicate effectively in an academic environment and to provide support to teachers, staff, and families to ensure success.
RSU #67 Speech/Language Pathologists have Master Level graduate degrees in Communication Disorders or Speech-Language Pathology. They hold Certificates of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), are certified through Maine Department of Education (DOE), and hold board certification through Maine Division of Professional Licensing (BESPA) Clinicians ensure provision of current treatment and methodologies, by attending outside conferences, participating in professional development, by subscribing to research journals and other professional organizations.
The Speech/Language Pathology Assistant has an Associate degree in Applied Science in Education with a concentration in speech language pathology. She is certified through the Maine Department of Education, and practices under the license and supervision of a Speech/language Pathologist
Areas of Intervention: The speech-language pathologist provides direct and/or consultative services for students having impairments in receptive and/or expressive language skills. These may include:
- Phonology/Articulation - the sound system of speech-language, and how these sounds are produced.
- Morphology - word forms, including the use of prefixes, suffixes, tenses, plurals, possessives, comparatives, and pronoun changes.
- Syntax - word order of sentence structure.
- Semantics - content and meaning of language.
- Pragmatics - appropriate use of language to a given situation.
- Social Skills- verbal as well as nonverbal behaviors involved in social interactions.
- Disorders of voice - hoarseness, harshness, inappropriate pitch, hypernasality, and hyponasality.
- Disfluency - disorders of fluency.
- Hearing impairments that affect the ability to understand and use spoken language.
Service Delivery: RSU #67 speech-language pathologists and speech language pathology assistant incorporate a variety of service delivery models in the least restrictive educational environment, based upon the learning style of the child. These models may include a combination of the following:
- Collaboration with Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists and Special Education Teachers
- Direct Services (individual, small group-outside of the classroom)
- Classroom/Parent Consultation
